Slovenia with Kids: The Ultimate Travel Guide

Slovenia is a beautiful country, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. It has stunning nature and an Alpine landscape that rivals Austria but still maintains its authenticity.

We chose it for our first trip abroad with the children because it is very convenient for a hub and spoke trip with short drives and at the same time unique in its own way

Technical Details

  • Ljubljana – the capital of Slovenia. The advantage of these flights is that they bring the traveler very close to the central tourist area – Lake Bled.
  • Zagreb – the capital of Croatia, located two hours’ drive from the central tourist areas of Slovenia. Arriving via Zagreb allows for a combination of a trip to northern Croatia with the vacation.
  • Venice – located a two and a half hour drive from the central touring areas.
  • Vienna – the farthest of all the options, but there is a wide range of flights to it. It can be combined with a trip to Carinthia in southern Austria.

Accommodation: We traveled for a week. We decided to dedicate most of the days to a hub and spoke tour in the Lake Bled area and additionally, to spend two days in the beautiful Logar Valley in the east of the country.

Car rental: An excellent search engine is economy car rentals. They also work with smaller rental companies that sometimes offer lower costs in the market. There is an option to cancel up to 48 hours before picking up the car.

Base trip in beautiful Slovenia

Day 1 - Starting off calmly, getting acquainted with Lake Bled and lots of rain

Yesterday we landed in Ljubljana in the evening. To not waste the next day, we took the car from the rental and drove to our accommodation in Bled. The drive was only half an hour. We woke up in the morning in the sweet town of Bled with everything wet outside. We started our first vacation day calmly. We took a rowboat and sailed to the church on the island in the center of the lake. It was a nice tour. When we returned, the rain had stopped and we decided to bike around Lake Bled. Before that, we went to check out the famous Bled cream cake at the Park Hotel. We rented bikes and set off around the lake. In the middle, it started raining heavily again and we got very wet. We continued riding wet, and after returning the bikes, we decided we were tired of all the rain and went back to the hotel for a bath in the thermal pools at the neighboring hotel.

At Lake Bled, there is an abundance of activities, countless attractions such as mountain slides, rope parks, rafting, zip-lining, canyoning and more.

Biking. Around Lake Bled, there are many options for cycling at all levels.

Rafting on the Sava River. Conducted twice a day. It is level 2-3, depending on the month of the year. Suitable from age 6

SUP lesson at Lake Bled. Getting to know Lake Bled through a guided SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) session

Canyoning. In the Lake Bled area, there are many options for waterfall rappelling. The activity is conducted in groups of 8 and takes about 3.5 hours.

Transparent kayak sailing. Guided sailing in Lake Bled with a transparent kayak. The tour takes about 1.5 hours.

Day 2 - The wild Lake Bohinj and an amazing and unexpected trail

Again, rainy. We set out towards Lake Bohinj. The route is charming, green, filled with bed and breakfasts and colorful villages. Full of beautiful places to stop and take pictures.

Lake Bohinj is larger than Lake Bled and less touristic, more dramatic. Everything was gray but we decided to try our luck and ascend Mount Vogel. The clouds dispersed but it was still gray. From above, a beautiful view of the entire lake was visible.

The next stop was the beautiful Savica Waterfall. Despite the unclear weather, we decided to continue the trip with raincoats, understanding that we had no choice and would need to adapt to such a tour. The path to the waterfall starts with an ascent through a dense forest and eventually reaches the waterfall. When we arrived at the waterfall, the rain intensified again. Wrapped well in raincoats and umbrellas, we watched the waterfall, its flow very strong due to the recent rains.

After a short break the rain stopped and it even cleared up a bit. We decided to go on a walking trail on the eastern shore of Lake Bohinj. One of the most beautiful trails of our vacation! It was a bit challenging for our 4-year-old, but he managed to finish bravely. Tired but satisfied, we returned to the hotel in Bled.

Day 3 - Triglav National Park, a beautiful waterfall, and a car train

Today is dedicated to Triglav National Park. It’s still rainy. But we understood that we need to change our mindset and continue touring in the rain. First stop – Kranjska Gora and the mountain train. In the ski town, there’s a cable car that takes you to the summit, and then you descend on a mountain slide. Great fun, a nice stop along the way.

From there to the beautiful Lake Jasna. A charming gem on the way. A recommended stop.

From there, we started climbing to the Vršič mountain pass on a winding road through the forest. Stopping for photos of the surrounding mountains. Many sheep and a beautiful landscape.

We start descending towards the Soča Valley. A winding descent and the Soča River flows beside us in a turquoise color.

The Soča Valley, with the town of Bovec at its center, is an amusement park of natural attractions. You can join the following activities:

Zipline over the Soča River. 11 zip-line sections. The activity takes about 3 hours.

Rafting on the Soča River. Considered to be more challenging than near Bled. There are options suitable for families.

Canyoning – waterfall rappelling. Suitable for beginners too. A water tour and rappelling that includes jumping and sliding down waterfalls

Paragliding. Gliding over the amazing landscapes of the Soča Valley

The next stop is the trail to Kozjak Waterfall. Until then, we were lucky and there was hardly any rain! The trail to the waterfall is charming, alongside a stream with everything green around. Crossing wooden bridges. In the middle of the walk, the rain started again, getting stronger and stronger. When we reached the waterfall itself, we had to climb wooden steps to see it. But the rain really, really intensified. We were already soaking wet. The waterfall, hidden behind rocks, was charming!! From there, we returned to the car still in pouring rain.

When we finished the trail, we saw that it was starting to get late. The tour in Triglav ends at Lake Bohinj, and the most convenient way is to take the car train for the last part. The train greatly shortens the distance and is also a very nice experience for everyone. We hurried to catch the last train. You need to arrive half an hour to 45 minutes before the departure time to really make it onto the train. We managed to get into the car queue in time.

Day 4 - Moving to the Valley of Legends, Logar Valley

Our last day in the Bled area. Today, finally, the sun came out. We had one more spot to cover – Vintgar Gorge. A very, very touristic place but a must-see. A lovely trail of walking on wooden bridges inside a river gorge of turquoise color. This was our first time on such a type of tour. A year later, we visited Austria where there are many famous gorges, but in our opinion, Vintgar Gorge was the most beautiful.

From there, we set off towards Logar Valley, our next destination. The journey was enchanting. We arrived at the valley in the afternoon. The valley is actually a nature reserve with many waterfalls surrounded by mountains, truly a valley of legends. It was already quite late to tour, so we just stopped to pick up some information leaflets and continued to our farmhouse for the next two days: Lenar Farm.

Additional recommended accommodations in Logar Valley

Day 5 - Logar Valley, the Valley of Legends and Fairies

Today is dedicated to the Logar Valley.

We started the day with a bike ride. We rented bikes at the farmhouse where we stayed and set off on beautiful forest bike trails. The weather was amazing. The sun shone, and the valley was painted in vibrant colors.

After the bike ride, we went on a walking tour to Rinka Waterfall. This waterfall is considered the highest in Slovenia. We walked through the forest and reached a viewpoint near the waterfall.

From Rinka Waterfall, we left the valley for a drive along a panoramic road that overlooks the beautiful valley.

Day 6 - The Karst Region

We left the beautiful valley and traveled to the area of Slovenia’s stalactite caves, heading towards Postojna Cave. A must-visit site in Slovenia, but also very touristic. There are other beautiful caves to visit, but the tours there are more challenging. With small children, Postojna Cave is the most convenient. The cave is amazing, with countless rooms full of stalactites in various shapes and sizes.

After a two-hour visit to the cave, we went to Predjama Castle. The castle is very close to the cave. It was built right into the rock. Inside, there are rooms that illustrate life within it.

Day 7 - Ljubljana

Today is dedicated to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Ljubljana is a beautiful and clean city, unique and pleasant, a city that exudes a calm atmosphere to its visitors. A visit there is summed up in a few hours of relaxed walking. The city is interesting and offers an abundance of museums, gardens, attractions, parks, churches, bridges, galleries, restaurants, cafes, and more. We walked for several hours in the old center and the market. On Fridays, there is a lovely food market.

Our summary

The week went by very fast. We discovered a beautiful country! A real gem. Still authentic, which definitely left us wanting more. The trip was the first trip abroad with young children and was very successful. Slovenia is very suitable for a first trip with small children because of the short drives and the possibility to spend a large part of the vacation as a hub and spoke trip.
