Accommodation: Our trip was for ten days. Seven days were dedicated to a star tour in the Salzburg region, staying in the town of Flachau. In the additional two days, we visited the Legoland park near Munich.
The hotels we stayed in:
Movenpack munich airport – Recommended hotel at Munich airport for families.
wechselmaishof – An apartment in a farmhouse in the town of Flachau with a stunning view.
LEGOLAND Feriendorf – Hotel in Legoland Park
Car rental: An excellent search engine is economy car rentals. They also work with smaller rental companies that sometimes offer lower costs in the market. There is an option to cancel up to 48 hours before picking up the car.
Starting our family adventure from Munich, we journeyed towards Flachau in the Salzburg region. Our first enchanting stop was at Germany’s Königssee, a crystal-clear lake ideal for families. A scenic boat ride took us to the picturesque St. Bartholomew’s Church, followed by a leisurely, kid-friendly trail along the lake and through the forest.
We returned by boat and had another 3-hour drive to Flachau. Waze led us through winding roads when suddenly a small sign announced that we had actually crossed into Austria!! The entry into Austria was very dramatic and impressive.
We arrived in the evening at a charming guesthouse at the top of the hill in Flachau, with a farmyard, farm animals, and a stunning view.
We started the day late and calmly.
We set out towards the famous Liechtensteinklamm. The route is along the gorge on wooden bridges and paths carved into the mountain above a raging river. The gorge is very impressive, but if you ask us, we liked the Vintgar Gorge in Slovenia more from our trip last year. Our trip in Slovenia
From there we continued towards Wagrain. It started to get rainy and wet, but we decided to take a chance and still go up the Grafenberg cable car to the top of the mountain. The decision was successful because the rain eased, and at the peak, a paradise for children and adults was revealed! It’s about a circular route at the peak along which are scattered playgrounds for children and sports facilities. The view was amazing with a beautiful little lake. We didn’t want to leave the place, but since we started late, the day was over and we returned to the guesthouse.
We woke up to a very sunny day and decided to take advantage of it to go to Grossglockner. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is considered the most beautiful scenic route in Austria! Along the way, there are stopping points for observation, walking trails, and attractions. A fascinating full day of touring. At its end, you arrive at the observation point over the Franz Josef Glacier. We decided to try to walk towards the glacier. The descent from the observation point is steep and time-consuming. At the bottom, we encountered glacial lakes. We continued towards the glacier, but the path was long and eventually, we decided to turn around and go back. The climb back up was not easy, steep.
We woke up again to a sunny and beautiful day and set out towards the Abtenau slides. The Abtenau slides are among the best family activities in the Salzburg region. The track is 2 km long with breathtaking scenery! We enjoyed the first round so much that we booked a second one.
From there we drove to Lake Gosau, which is very close by. Lake Gosau is a magical lake, stunning in its beauty. We circled it on a walking tour and then took a cable car to the peak above it to observe it from above.
After our visit to Gosau, we drove to the touristy and famous town of Hallstatt. Hallstatt became so popular for a reason. It’s a charming town with stone and wood houses that kiss the lake. The town is built right on the side of the mountain. We ate at one of the restaurants by the lake and then walked across it. On our way back to the car, we stopped at the nice bathing beach and the playground there and spent some more time.
We headed north towards the Hallein salt mine. The visit was a very experiential one. We received miners’ clothing, slid down a slide into the mine, and began a guided tour. The tour is very enjoyable for both adults and children. During the tour, we also sailed on an underground lake.
Lammerklamm. An easy walking path, occasionally with wooden bridges. The gorge gradually widens. At the end, it’s possible to get right up to the waterline. A very impressive route, surrounded by high rocks and the vibrant color of the flowing water. Highly recommended!!
When we finished the route, it was the right time to reach Hohenwerfen Castle and see the eagle show. The castle is very impressive and offers beautiful views. It has displays of swords and weapons that are very suitable for boys..:-)
The day was dedicated to the city of Salzburg. We arrived at the old center. We started with a visit to the cathedral and the beautiful squares around it. The atmosphere in the streets is pleasant, with street musicians performing. From there, we went up to visit the fortress built on a hill in the heart of the city. The view from it is stunning!
After we descended from the fortress, we visited the cemetery garden :-). It is not a standard cemetery. It is a cemetery that is actually a charming corner adorned with flowers. A lot of beauty and color.
We continued to wander through the beautiful alleys of the city and after getting tired, we headed towards the Natural History and Science Museum. The museum is very well invested, and we spent several hours there.
The last day in Flachau! We decided on a relaxing day around the guesthouse. In the morning, we went out for a bike ride. We rented bikes for all of us in Flachau and rode on the beautiful trails that connect the nearby towns. Everything is very convenient and well-organized. Lots of greenery and water.
After returning tired but satisfied, we drove towards the nearby water park: Erlebnis-Therme Amadé.
Today we are leaving Austria 🙁 In the morning, we set out on the long journey towards Legoland Germany. On the way, we stopped for a short visit at Lake Chiemsee.
And towards noon, we arrived at the Legoland holiday village. We received a knights’ room that really excited the boys.
♥ First option – Near Legoland there is a holiday village designed suitably for children. On the Legoland website, you can find various packages with accommodation, meals, and park visits. All components need to be considered and the cost-effectiveness calculated. On one hand, the proximity of the village to the park is very convenient, and the facilities around, tailored for children, enhance the holiday. On the other hand, in our opinion, the food is of low quality and the rooms are relatively simple. The price of the packages is not cheap. Legoland website.
♥ Second option – Staying in nearby Günzburg and purchasing a daily entry ticket to Legoland. Sometimes you can find significant discounts on park entry on food packaging in supermarkets or promotions on various websites.
And we set out on foot towards the park itself. The advantage of the Legoland holiday village is that you get entrance to the park both on the day of arrival and the next day. This allows for a more relaxed enjoyment, especially with small children who find it hard to be in the park for a whole day from morning to evening.
The last day of the vacation. 🙁 We went out in the morning again to visit Legoland to complete what we didn’t manage the day before. Towards noon, the boys were already tired, and from there, we set off towards the hotel at Munich airport. Tomorrow we return to our country.
Austria is a beautiful country and a kids friendly destination. There are so many options for traveling and visiting. I recommend that anyone traveling for a week to 10 days focus on just one region because there is so much to do!!
